Ghananian Food in London vs Accra? We Got DarkoVibes to Compare

It’s a wet and averagely British day in North East London when we meet Darkovibes at Accra Palace, a Ghanaian food restaurant in Upper Clapton. Best known for his blending his music with highlife, hiphop, Afrobeats & other genres, we managed to pin the Ghanaian musician down for a bite to eat on his latest trip to the UK.

How would you compare Ghanian food in London to Accra? 

I would say they almost taste the same, just some meals have different spices.

How would you describe the food culture in Accra compared to the rest of the world?

The rest of the world is a big place but Accra has a very good food culture, we really love and appreciate good food, we even go to food festivals from time to time. So yes I would say we have a good food culture.

What’s the staple local dish that everyone needs to try when they first touch down?

I would say Kenkey or Banku with Tilapia, maybe if you like spice you can go for Shito or if you don't like spice you can go for stew or tomato sauce & you'll love it. If not then there's Jollof or Fried Rice & Chicken.

Street Food - what’s it saying?

There's a lot of street food in Accra. You can go to Republic Bar & you can have Epos, these are my spots where I go out every evening to eat.

If there’s one tip you could give to someone visiting Accra for the first time, what would it be?

I would say i'm not sure what you are here to do but if you are here to relax maybe go to the beach or climb the mountains or check out the forest. There's different vibes here & there's a lot of historic things to see too.

How has travel impacted your artistry?

It has really broadened my scope a lot. I would say that travelling has really opened my mind to a lot of cultures and sounds, so yeah I really enjoy travelling a lot.
