Yard Nice: A Jamaican Travel Diary

"Travel, specifically travel to the Caribbean, is always home in every way imaginable. The smells are familiar, the sun is usual, the sounds are waves of memory, and the people are family. Travel is freedom and privilege, and responsibility."

We touchdown on the shores of Jamaica with photographer, Kirth Bobb who shares his photography series, Yard Nice, a loosely curated set of photographs made during some of his recent travels to the island.

Can you share a little behind Yard Nice?

I'm Guyanese, but Jamaica's cultural potency is undeniable. YAAD Nice is a loosely curated set of photographs I've made during some of my recent travels to Jamaica.

Jamaica is your second home, what's your favourite thing about living there?

The people.

I'm always humbled whenever I go to Jamaica. I'm humbled by how expansive life on the island and how the vibrance of the peoples' spirit show up in every part of their way of being. There's an energy there that makes me feel just a little more audacious and alive. Then there's the community. I've been lucky enough to have been welcomed into an amazing community in Jamaica, and although it's still very early on this journey, I feel at home already.

How would you describe Jamaica to someone who's never been?

YARD Nice, you just have to find your little corner.

Is there anyone you met on your trip that's made a lasting impression?

There are too many to list at this point. I think Jamaicans are my favorite people, and that's not taking anything away from other people, but I can't recount one part of my life growing up where Jamaicans haven't been good to me and treated me like family.

What was the best thing you experienced on the trip?

Sunsets. I live for a good sunset when I'm in Jamaica. There are so many other best things about the island, but a good sunset is almost a daily guarantee.
