Berlin has long stood out for its progressive mind-set, built on community values and inclusion. While this is most famously recognised in the city’s clubs and nightlife, the same spirit also defines its daytime culture - with running clubs as a focal point.

"We create a safe space for everyone - and together, we turn the city into our playground" says Maurice Pehle, founding member of run cub, LOAD, a run club we've been following with New Balance to mark the Berlin Marathon. Pehle's crew hold weekly 'easy' 7km runs every Monday, alongside numerous other activities and workshops.

Alongside novice members, run clubs also cater to seasoned athletes like Jana Miksch, a former competitive swimmer who joined KRAFT run club in 2016. "The best thing about Berlin is that you can run with a community almost every day," she says.

While there are dozens of run groups across the city, there is no sense of rivalry like competitive sports teams; Jana often switches her routes by linking up with different groups. "I have lots of friends who are part of different running groups, and I enjoy running with them wherever they are. It's always like a nice family reunion."

Jana has run total of 15th marathons - including 8 in Berlin, her home city. "As a born and raised Berliner, the Berlin Marathon is an absolute highlight for me. I have run all over the world, but here it is always something special. The vibe is already awesome a week before the event."

This year, in its 51st edition, the Berlin Marathon welcomed over 55,000 runners - with Harry Styles also signing on. Known for efficient organisation, flat paths and mild weather - it is one of the world’s most popular marathons. With multiple record-breaking times set there, it is also known as the speediest marathon route.

While the Berlin Marathon is an annual highlight for many of Berlin's run clubs, it's never a forced essential. Clubs meet weekly regardless, with trips catering for runners who seek trial running, gravel routes, speed training, or just gentle jogs.

Jana has seen firsthand how run clubs have evolved in their approach to getting everyone on board, "today there are more communities that respond to the needs of their members and create their own safe spaces. This is a really wonderful development."
