The Racial Politics in Casablanca
Having conversed on multiple occasions with Senegalese co-workers and Ivorian hairdressers and after years of observing, analysing and understanding the dynamics between various ethnicities, I have compiled some thoughts below:
Colourism is common. Overt racism often concerns refugees and beggars but there is also covert racism aimed at foreigners in more advantageous positions; students and expats of colour struggle to rent flats sometimes. These communities are subject to psychological pressure more than physical violence because of the stares, the whispers and the unfairness. It is saddening to say that Morocco is racist against Black people…You can hear it, see it and feel it. Though less common in tourist areas, it’s not rare for people to shout racist comments on the streets.
