This year, I went on a mission to create a soul food fusion concept, Bando Belly with co-founder Alex Sintunayake. London is the world’s biggest melting pot and living in the capital means fusion is everywhere - food, music and of course the people. How many places in the world would an English, Turkish and Indian man all know the appropriate response to wagwan?!!
Bando Belly is about taking that exact energy and putting it on a plate; I have created a menu to highlight a diverse selection of flavours from all around the globe to reimagine London’s soul food.

Bando Belly

A cute cafe serving classic Vietnamese dishes, they know me here as the woman who orders a table full of food. Don't miss the BÁNH XÈO Crêpe filled with pork or chicken, prawns, onion, bean sprouts and salad. CÁNH GÀ CHIÊN BƠ chicken wings with garlic butter and lemongrass. All their Pho are delicious or BÚN TÔM XÀO king prawns on rice. 

Cafe Mama Pho

A Filipino food truck station outside Peckham library. They have been serving banging tender beef in adobo and marinated grilled chicken over rice with green and spicy sauces. You can grab a large box for £7 I always grab two one for now one for me and brother to fight over later.

Filishack

Two Nigerian sisters with food as bold as they are. Their spin on Nigerian classics will have your mouth watering and belly full. My go to is the beef suya and prawn fried rice but grab a mixed plate for a taste of everything. 

The Flygerians

A family run business with warm friendly service. Serving an array of South American food from tacos to arepas. I always get the beef chachapa, a sweet corn pancake with shredded beef and soft cheese.

Cravings La Carreta

A Mediterranean fusion kitchen inside a new bar that has a banging playlist full of amapiano bangers. Their portions never leave you hungry, there’s a tapas style menu and some great mains. I’ve had the thick sea bass fillet several times but I’m dying to try the confit duck and bean puree.

Limett Bistro

A traditional Eritrean restaurant serving vegan/ veggie delights tasty fish dishes and my favourite kulwa, which is lamb fried in ghee, onion and green chilli. Everything comes with Injera, a teff flour sourdough pancake. For first timers I suggest the combos based on how many people you're with, selections picked by the chef made for sharing. Great for date nights or group visits, make a night of it by trying the traditional honey wine and end with the authentic coffee ceremony.

Adulis

Huge Peruvian restaurant with great outdoor seating for a spot of people watching. The cocktails are strong, and food packed with flavour. I have unashamedly ordered the same thing every time, grilled beef heart in aji amarillo and cod ceviche. The softness and deep flavour of the beef heart is unforgettable.

Titos

Master Chefs 2011 winner’s Japanese fusion restaurant serves great Japanese classics with sprinkles of Caribbean flavours. My go to is the Leopard ramen, a super thick creamy pork broth with parmesan and scotch bonnet or the extraordinary lazy goat ramen boneless curry goat with noodles, that one is a spice girl for sure!

Nanban

This hole in the wall in Brixton a mother and daughter serving Colombian street food. Seeing a girl walking down Brixton high street with a massive snow cone piled with fruit and I had to stop her to ask where I could get one. Think fruit salad in fruit juice covered with a mountain of shaved ice and condensed milk and syrup. There's a lot going on but oh my there's a lot more to love. A super sweet summer treat. If its a hot day be ready to wait up to 30 mins.

Cholados 

A great fun Korean BBQ restaurant, a huge menu to choose from. This place you can take anyone, and they will enjoy. Don't go too crazy with the starters the wings and beef short ribs are my favourite or you'll have to come back twice like me to try the BBQ. Always order a bottle of soju and a pot of makgeolli, the milky, off-white, and lightly sparkling rice wine, get a cab home you will need it!

A cozy restaurant in Colonia Juárez where you can enjoy really nice sandwiches, amazing appetisers like ceviche, delicious bread and a selection of beverages – including vermouth.

A hidden gem in Mexico, Loose Blues has a diverse kitchen with flavours from Asian cuisines as well as amazing cocktails and a great selection of music. They also have a store with contemporary fashion from local brands and an online radio.

An amazing and fun Sunday ceviche pop-up kitchen in the heart of downtown CDMX with a spectacular view of the Torre Latino. The place offers a really nice vibe and features amazing local, iconic DJs and guests to set the mood for the afternoon.

Located in the south of the city, this familiar place is a favourite, offering dishes from the southern peninsula of Mexico. Nothing on the menu costs more than 99.99 pesos (hence the name). Highly recommended dishes include lime soup, mix panuchos, and taquitos of queso relleno.

A hidden showroom in the heart of downtown Mexico City, Materia Lab specialises in street fashion, reflecting the essence of current urban style culture in Mexico.

The Black Lodge is an intimate, Twin Peaks inspired, bar which is always decorated with beautiful bouquets that contrast the dark walls and the smoky mix of a shady Berlin crowd. You’ll find a nice selection of beers and well done cocktails, served by a really nice team.

Apparently run by the owners of Balck Lodge, Bar Brutal has all the things that remind me of the wild times in early 2000’s Berlin Mitte. The right mix of good drinks (long waits) and people who occasionally use the bathrooms for literally everything but their intentional function.

This West Berlin 1980’s relic is so unique that I have a hard time describing it. It’s kinda trashy, kinda kitsch but then just cool at the same time because of its realness. In no-covid times Kumpelnest was always packed with the most eclectic crowd and there was always a vibe. The perfect stop-over on a wild bar night when you need to dance to a Madonna song before moving over to one of the big clubs.

This is a real “Kneipe”, an Eastern German worker’s bar. The Service (usually two middle aged women) draught the beer and prepare simple meals in the small kitchen. It’s one of those places that smell like the hundred thousand of Beers that have been served, blended with old wooden floors. Love to come here whenever I’m in Mitte and have no plans afterwards.

Schwarze Pumpe

Do De Li is located around the corner from where I live and I have been walking past this restaurant for many years until one rainy night about 3 years ago. It’s worth mentioning that when we entered the place for the first time it looked different than now. It was this cozy, kinda dark, typical Chinese family restaurant with one major difference about it. The walls were covered in framed drawings, showing fantastic beings, drawn in small squares consisting of parallel lines. The nerdy kind of drawing if you know what I mean. They turned out to be drawn by the owner’s 11yo son who is highly gifted and has waaay beyond average IQ. 

Who else is highly gifted here, is the chef. All dishes are extremely tasty and well cooked. The Mapo Tofu is bomb and what’s absolutely outstanding for me are the fried noodles (side dish).
If you go, also try one of their beautiful teas i.e. Rose Tea, the smell is just beautiful.

Just this: If you are in Neukölln and have a desire for a good Pizza, W is your place to go. It’s simply Berlin’s best Pizza. Period.

The 2nd Chinese restaurant in my neighbourhood that deserves attention. Sitting on a corner in the middle of Kanstr. (Berlin’s Chinatown), it has big windows that give way into the neon light bathed restaurant. Vibrant and delicious, Aroma is my favourite Berlin late night restaurant where one can eat delicious food until 3am, every day. We usually come here after a late screening in the cinema and never get tired of it. The Water Spinach and Pork ribs Salt and Pepper are amazing.

This is new on the Peckham scene. It's been open for about a year now. It feels mad safe and when you're out you obviously want to make sure that the vibes are correct, so it gives you that level of homeyness. Having a place where you can turn up, feel cosy, get mashed and have fun with your friends is a vibe!

Being in the heart of Peckham you do really feel its pulse. You feel its energy every Friday when there's a queue stretching down to the police station. You have to recognise what's going on in the area, it's becoming fully gentrified. Prince of Peckham is changing the narrative for modern day British pubs and it's one of the last pubs that's recognised as a place for the community and for people that identify as ethnic minorities.

Before you talk about The Flygerians you need to talk about the founders, twins Jess and Joel. They have a lot of Nigerian takes on classic dishes so for people that don't have an introduction to Nigerian food, its a bit of a more palatable way and a nice introduction into getting a taste of those Nigerian flavours.

I used to come down to Coney Island Board Walk with my parents on spur of the moment trips in the evenings, and later on as a teenager to watch the weekly firework displays in the summer. Now, I like to go for the music, performances and to sit by the beach in the mornings. I always order frog legs at Nathan’s – a little-known Brooklyn classic!

Continuing with the nostalgic theme: I used to catch horseshoe crabs and run around in torn down buildings, but now this entire area has been developed and the park has expanded into a beautiful place to hang out. My favourite spots from childhood are the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory, Grimaldi’s Pizza and Jacques Torres – a chocolate shop.

This neighbourhood bistro is a veritable jewel, a place like few others in Paris. You'll find everything you need in a bar: a counter, regulars sharing laughter and conversation in an unpretentious, friendly atmosphere. Marie, the owner, is a strong-willed woman who has been running the place for over 25 years, never letting herself be influenced by trends.

If you're looking for a place to kick a basketball right in the heart of Paris, look no further than the Playground at Village Saint-Paul. This little basketball court hidden away in this bucolic micro-neighborhood is a wonderful playground, where you can take on the locals in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The place is ideal for a game with friends or even to meet other enthusiasts.

Village Saint-Paul is the perfect place for a stroll. Its typically Parisian architecture, with cobbled streets and charming little squares, creates a soothing atmosphere, strangely far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city.

If you'd like to take a breather from all the Parisian euphoria, we highly recommend a visit to La Recyclerie. Housed in a disused railway station in northern Paris, this eco-responsible canteen is much more than just a café. It's a place for living, meeting and inspiration, combining a plant-based atmosphere, a recycled furniture workshop and a view of an urban garden laid out on the disused tracks. It's the perfect place to relax, exchange ideas and get inspired, in a space that's full of positive energy.

A mythical flea market where time seems to stand still. It's an eclectic mix of vintage treasures, unlikely antiques and one-off pieces. It's also a place
where you can meet colourful personalities who contribute to the vibrant soul of this space. One example is Albert de Paname, a multi-talented artist who embodies the bohemian spirit of the Puces. And don't miss Jeff French Vintage, with its incredible stock of vintage clothing. 

Whether you're looking for a weathered leather jacket or an accessory that tells a story, you're bound to find what you're looking for.

The Maison de Balzac is a real hidden gem. Located in the 16e arrondissement, slightly removed from the hustle and bustle of Paris, this house-museum is a haven of peace steeped in history.

It was here that the writer lived and worked on some of his most famous works, including La Comédie Humaine. As you stroll through the carefully preserved rooms, you'll discover manuscripts, personal objects and anecdotes that plunge you into the world of one of France's greatest authors.

The garden, with its breathtaking view of the Eiffel Tower, is a real favourite. It's  for a contemplative break, where the mind escapes both into history and the beauty of the present moment. Maison de Balzac is a timeless interlude, a place where you can reconnect with art and history in a unique setting.

We couldn't end without recommending a culinary destination - after all, we're in France! À Mi-chemin means “halfway” in French. This restaurant is where Tunisian and Breton cuisine meet, thanks to a love between two chefs.

It offers an audacious menu with dishes that surprise as much as they delight. Each dish, like their lobster couscous, strikes the perfect balance between French tradition and Tunisian influences, with a precision that borders on the flawless and a generosity that we love. The atmosphere is simple, with no fuss, and you immediately feel comfortable, enhanced by the warmth and kindness of the owners. A moment to be shared, savoured and repeated. Simple, authentic and terribly effective.

Jericho is one of the oldest cities in the world, it is around 11,000 years old, (lol, that number apparently exists), and it is the lowest point on earth, 258m below sea level. There, you will find Deir al Krntl, The Monastery of Temptation, which dates back to the Seleucid Empire, and where Jesus fasted for 40 days after getting baptized in the Jordan River. It is a beautiful monastery, built on the edge of a mountain cliff, overlooking the whole area, including Jericho, the Dead Sea, and a bit of Jordan. To get there, you can hike or take an aerial tramway.

The Gaza strip is a restricted area for everyone. Since 2008, Israel decided that people in Gaza all deserve life in prison. So they put the whole city under siege, and closed off all entry and exit points. But, if you do manage to get a permit to visit, go. The people there are the friendliest and most creative people you will meet. You can sit on the beach of the Mediterranean sea, which you can see from all over Palestine, but can never reach, you can eat really good food - there are too many things to see in Gaza... we can write a full article just about that.

Through the checkpoints and hassle, which can take between an hour to seven, depending on the day and the soldiers mood, you can get to Jenin. In Arraba, you can go to the Abdelhadi Palaces (Our palaces - just to brag). These Palaces have been within the family for more than 100 years, 2 of them have been renovated into a Turkish Bath and a public library. You can also start a walk from ARRABA TO BURQIN, where you pass through a spring, a roman wall, and Burqin Church, which is the 3rd oldest church in the world.

Also known as ‘Little Damascus’, a place where visiting the old market (souq) is a must. Some of the few things its popular for are nablus knafeh; my dad has been eating knafe, a really sweet dessert, every day since he was born. He used to take me to eat knafe almost every day as well when I was a kid, which is the reason why I don’t eat it anymore. He still finds that weird. It’s nablus soap and Turkish baths. I personally travel with that soap and always have some in whichever house and in whatever country I live in. You’ll also find the Samaritan Museum. Samaritan’s believe that mount Gerizim in Nablus is the holy place for the Israelis. The Samaritans have always been neutral, they don’t like politics and don’t get into it. They speak Arabic and Hebrew and they live on both sides with both people.

Nablus

On the way to Ramallah you will run into Taybeh village and the Taybeh brewery. The first female-run microbrewery in the Middle East. If you are there in the Oktoberfest, you will be very happy that day. Fresh beer from the cellars and a beautiful spot on top of the mountain. After Taybeh comes Birzeit, a beautiful old village. There you can find “Malek il falafel” the best Falafel in the area. Brilliant homemade Palestinian dishes in an old traditional house. In Birzeit, you can also find the Palestinian Museum. Getting into Ramallah, there is Snowbar Garden; it is this beautiful garden built into the mountain with a great view. Great drinks and a pool for the summer times. Other good bars are Garage Cafe, La Grotta Bar and Radio Bar.

Ramallah

Heading out of Ramallah, through a lot of checkpoints, with a lot of views of illegal settlements, through mountains, through a lot of hassle and humiliation, you’ll get to the birthplace of Jesus, which is definitely a site to see in the nativity church. There is a shorter way to get there through Jerusalem, which is safer as well and doesn’t make you dizzy and sick, but it wouldn’t be called an occupation if we were able to drive on it. So if you are Palestinian you cant take that road. The old city of Beit Sahour is incredible as well. If you want something to eat and you like chicken, Qabar goes back forever; the menu is only chicken (these guys seriously don’t have any pics that’s how old school they are). You can also find the hotel that Banksy opened, with a straight-up view of the 8m high segregation wall and checkpoint. The walled-off hotel is a must-visit spot with a lot of Banksy art. Banksy visits Palestine a lot, especially Bethlehem, during your trip you will find a lot of his graffiti on the walls of the city. If you get tired of the wall blocking your view, you can go to Hosh il Yasmine; a very nice chill spot and has a lot of music events and a great view of the mountains around you. On your way to Hebron you can pass by Battir village, god’s paradise on earth.

Bethlehem

Hebron market (souq) with its maze of alleys is definitely worth exploring. The shops and stalls sell everything from locally made pottery, glass, rugs, and embroidered items to fresh and dried fruits. The old city has plenty of archaeological sites worth visiting. In Hebron, they make everything… they literally can make anything. The old city also gives a real sense of what it feels like to be under occupation, as the old city is occupied by extremist settlers and protected by over 1500 soldiers making it a really intense environment. As you can see in the pictures, you can always notice netting on the top of everything. That is because the settlers tried to drive people out by throwing their trash on top of the people of Hebron. So instead of leaving, people put nets all over to catch the trash. It is very intense living there, this is why we always say when a Hebron person puts his mind to something, nothing will stop them. There is nothing like a Khalili head. They even recently approved a new illegal settlement to be built where the market is, so now there is an order to bulldoze the market.

Fast or Slow Ferry, 15 minutes or 30 minutes, wether you need to get there quick or slow its the best way to see Sydney Harbour. Can get a drink and sit upstairs as you float between the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.
